Layering Light: The Secret to a High-End Kitchen
Introduction
A high-end kitchen is never lit by one source alone. It requires precise task lighting for preparation, ambient light for comfort, accent light for architecture, and decorative lighting for atmosphere.
The Four Essential Kitchen Lighting Layers
1. Task Lighting
Task lighting illuminates work surfaces where precision matters: chopping, cooking, plating, and cleaning.
Recommended Placement
Under-cabinet lighting should sit toward the front edge of the cabinet, not against the wall. This prevents the person working at the counter from casting a shadow over the preparation area.
Colour temperature: 3000K
CRI: 90+
Diffused output to avoid visible LED dots

2. Ambient Lighting
Ambient light provides general illumination. In kitchens, this usually comes from recessed downlights, surface-mounted fittings, or architectural ceiling lighting.
Downlight Spacing Rule
As a practical rule, space downlights approximately 1.2m to 1.5m apart, depending on beam angle and ceiling height. Keep downlights 60cm to 90cm from the wall unless intentionally washing a vertical surface.
3. Accent Lighting
Accent lighting gives a kitchen depth. Use it to illuminate open shelving, fluted timber, marble or quartzite splashbacks, display cabinets, artwork, and sculpture.
4. Decorative Lighting
Decorative lighting is the visual signature of the kitchen. Pendants over an island or breakfast counter define the gathering zone.
Kitchen Island Pendant Height
Hang pendants 75cm to 90cm above the countertop. For multiple pendants, allow 50cm to 70cm between pendants and 30cm to 45cm from the island ends.
Avoid the Common Kitchen Lighting Mistake
The most common mistake is relying only on downlights. This creates a flat ceiling grid and often leaves worktops poorly illuminated because the person standing at the counter blocks the light.
Recommended Colour Temperature
For premium residential kitchens in South Africa, REO generally recommends 3000K for contemporary warmth, 2700K for softer decorative pendant lighting, and 4000K only for utility-focused spaces.
Conclusion
A well-lit kitchen is planned in layers, not scattered with fittings. Browse REO’s kitchen lighting collection or contact the REO technical team for a lighting layout suited to your project.
