The Perfect Proportion: How to Size and Hang Dining Room Pendants

Introduction

A dining room pendant should feel intentional, not improvised. Too small, and it disappears above the table. Too low, and it interrupts conversation. Too large, and it overwhelms the room. The best dining lighting is a balance of proportion, scale, glare control, and atmosphere.

This guide explains how to select and position dining room pendants with precise measurements used by interior designers, architects, and lighting professionals.

The Guide

Start With the Table, Not the Room

Your pendant should relate primarily to the dining table beneath it. The table anchors the composition, so pendant sizing should be calculated from the table’s width and length rather than the overall room size.

Pendant Width Rule

As a general rule, the pendant or chandelier should be approximately one-half to two-thirds the width of the dining table.

  • A 90cm wide table works well with a pendant between 45cm and 60cm wide.

  • A 100cm wide table works well with a pendant between 50cm and 65cm wide.

  • A 120cm wide table can accommodate a pendant between 60cm and 80cm wide.

The fitting should never extend to the edge of the table. Leave visual breathing room so the pendant feels suspended within the setting rather than crowding it.

Ideal Hanging Height Above a Dining Table

The bottom of the pendant should typically sit 75cm to 90cm above the tabletop. This range allows the light to define the dining zone without blocking eye contact across the table.

Use the Lower End for Intimacy

For intimate dining rooms, moody interiors, or low-glare fittings, hang closer to 75cm above the tabletop.

Use the Higher End for Larger Rooms

For larger rooms, open-plan spaces, or visually heavier chandeliers, hang closer to 85cm to 90cm above the tabletop.

How to Position Multiple Pendants

For long dining tables, multiple pendants can create rhythm and balance.

Two Pendants

Use two pendants for tables from approximately 180cm to 240cm long. Leave 60cm to 80cm between pendant centres and at least 30cm from each pendant centre to the table end.

Three Pendants

Use three pendants for tables from approximately 240cm to 320cm long. Leave 50cm to 70cm between pendant centres and at least 30cm to 45cm from the outer pendants to the table ends.

Consider Ceiling Height

A standard South African ceiling height is often around 2.4m to 2.7m. In these rooms, pendant drop length must be carefully controlled.

  • 2.4m ceiling: keep the pendant visually light and close to the 75cm table clearance.

  • 2.7m ceiling: standard pendant proportions work well.

  • 3m+ ceiling: consider larger forms, grouped pendants, or chandeliers with vertical scale.

Choose the Right Light Temperature

Dining rooms require warmth and comfort. REO recommends 2700K for intimate warmth and 3000K for refined contemporary dining rooms. Avoid 4000K+ unless the space is highly modern and intentionally crisp.

Control Glare

A pendant should illuminate the table, not shine directly into the eyes of guests. Look for diffused glass, recessed light sources, fabric or opal shades, and downward-directed light where task visibility is needed.

Conclusion

The best dining room pendant is not simply decorative. It is scaled to the table, positioned for conversation, and selected for atmosphere. Browse the REO dining lighting collection or contact the REO technical team for project guidance.
